Alupent Discontinued

"According to a statement from Boehringer Ingelheim, Alupent MDI will be discontinued in order to help achieve the goals of the Montreal Protocol.
The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty intended to eliminate the use of substances that contribute to destroying the ozone layer, including CFCs (chlorofluocarbons). Alupent MDI uses CFCs as a propellant (as do other currently marketed MDIs). Boehringer Ingelheim continues to assure patients and physicians that this discontinuation is in response to the Montreal Protocol, not because of safety concerns for patients.Prescription will be discontinued once the existing supplies available through pharmacies have been exhausted. This is expected to occur as early as mid-December of 2008." Link

I've never heard that Alupent was going to go bye bye. There are only two patients I know of who still use it, and they do so because of a self declared allergy to Albuterol. If these patients truly befefit from Albuterol, it's a shame it has to go away like this.

Alupent is the only drug that has consistantly worked for me. I've tried other medications and always ended up with life threatening attacks. I'm very concerned that without alupent I may die or at the least be housebound on a nebulizer.

It's a shame that a hoax theory has to take precidents over the lives of people. This again shows the failure of society in this regards.

How unfortunate! I've been on Alupent ALL of my life - I will turn 38 in Dec. I was just informed moments ago by the pharmacist when calling in for a refill about Alupent being discontinued. Of course, she didn't know why so I used Google. Ugh!! Why didn't anyone warn me?! It's Sat...now, I've got to stress about this all weekend until I can talk to my Dr. on Mon. I am beyond annoyed!!

Same here. I've been using Alupent since I was two. Nothing else is as effective. The Montreal Protocol was exempt from medications until recently. Who cares about the Canadians anyway?!?!?!

Write your congressmen(women). I hear very few people like the NEW Albuterol due to the new propellants.

They could change the propellant. It is just an excuse to discontinue older drugs that are cheaper in order to get patients on to newer drugs which are much more profitable for the drug companies.

Anonymous (Jan 30, 2009) is right. The patent on the drug has expired, and the drug companies are just using the Montreal Protocol as an excuse to get doctors to switch their patients to more expensive drugs.
